Verra Publishes BECCS-Module

We’re excited to announce that the CCS+ Initiative has just reached a second milestone with Verra approving and publishing the “CO2 Capture from Bioenergy” (BECCS) module as part of the CCS+ Framework Methodology for use in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program.

Released alongside this important module are two complementary tools: one for differentiating Reductions and Removals in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, and one for accounting non-VCS CO2 streams in CCS projects. Together, this module and the two tools mark a step forward in expanding the scope of the CCS+ methodology, enabling high-integrity certification of BECCS projects and enhancing consistency across a range of carbon capture applications.

Developed through extensive collaboration with 50+ global stakeholders – ranging from technology start-ups, project developers, academia, civil society and established capture, transport, and storage providers – these modules and tools reinforce CCS+ as a robust framework for industrial carbon management.

Looking ahead, the CCS+ Initiative is advancing the development of the CO2 capture from biomass transformation processes (bioproducts) module, which will address the carbon accounting of biogenic sources other than combustion. This upcoming module will further broaden the framework methodology’s scope, supporting climate solutions across the bioeconomy and strengthening the CCS+ initiative’s position as an enabler of credible, scalable carbon removal.
